How to Deal With Problematic Patients

John Craven

The world is a diverse place, and you meet different types of people every day, especially when you are a physician. But the most difficult of all is dealing with problematic patients. Every physician has to encounter at least one problematic patient that wreaks havoc at your workspace. In fact, there is research that proves that physicians tend to make more mistakes when they deal with problematic patients.

But the question arises how do you deal with problematic patients?

Well, no need to worry, there are some types of patients and how you can deal with problematic patients.

1. Anger

The most common emotion that you will face from a patient is that they get angry very easily. Sometimes it is not even your fault that they are angry, they just release their stress over you. Showing anger from your side is the worst thing to do. As a physician, you have to listen to them calmly.

You might find it unfair, but this is the easiest way of dying out their anger.

2. Late

There are times when your whole schedule is booked with patients, so if even one patient is late, your whole schedule becomes messed up. Dealing with late patients can be tricky.

One way to deal with it is to call them or email them to remind them, or charge them for being late so that you don’t suffer from any loss.

3. Self-Diagnose

These patients are the google nerds who search every disease on google and then diagnose themselves based on the symptoms they find. Even if you convince them there is nothing wrong, they will still refuse to believe you.

The best way to deal with these patients is to first let them describe what they found, and then use logical and explanatory skills to make them definite about their condition, show them graphs and charts of their condition and reason your conclusion.

4. Anxiety

Many patients are very anxious about their health which is reasonable. They are quite shy and sometimes too emotional that you feel flustered in front of them.

You have to be very gentle with them, assure them that you will treat them and that they will be healthy again. If you refuse to acknowledge them, they will bother you a lot. So always deal with emotions with confidence.
